Availability: YouTube's thumbnail A/B testing is available to YouTube Partner Program (YPP) members with over 1,000 subscribers.

How to Set Up a Thumbnail A/B Test

1

Go to YouTube Studio

Navigate to YouTube Studio and click "Content" in the left sidebar to see your videos.

2

Select the Video to Test

Click on the video you want to test. Older videos with existing impressions data provide more reliable test results.

3

Find the Test Thumbnail Option

In the video details page, scroll to the Thumbnail section. If eligible, you'll see "Run a test" or "Add test thumbnail."

4

Upload Your Test Thumbnail

Upload the alternative thumbnail. Make sure the two thumbnails differ in only one major variable for cleaner data.

5

Let the Test Run

YouTube splits impressions between both thumbnails. Allow at least 7–14 days for statistically meaningful results.

6

Read Results and Apply

Check which thumbnail earned a higher CTR. Select the winner and note what design choices made it more effective.
