Guessing which thumbnail will perform better is a thing of the past. YouTube's built-in A/B testing feature lets you run controlled experiments to find out objectively which thumbnail earns more clicks.
Navigate to YouTube Studio and click "Content" in the left sidebar to see your videos.
Click on the video you want to test. Older videos with existing impressions data provide more reliable test results.
In the video details page, scroll to the Thumbnail section. If eligible, you'll see "Run a test" or "Add test thumbnail."
Upload the alternative thumbnail. Make sure the two thumbnails differ in only one major variable for cleaner data.
YouTube splits impressions between both thumbnails. Allow at least 7–14 days for statistically meaningful results.
Check which thumbnail earned a higher CTR. Select the winner and note what design choices made it more effective.
Study top-performing thumbnails in your niche before designing test variants.
