More free YouTube thumbnail tools
Downloading a thumbnail is usually step one. These tools help you study what works and make your own thumbnails better — everything runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- Copy the video link. On desktop, copy the address bar. On the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link. Shorts links work too.
- Paste it above and press Get thumbnails. We read the 11-character video ID from the link — nothing is uploaded.
- Pick a size and press Download. “Max resolution” is the full 1280×720 HD image when the creator uploaded one.
Prefer doing it by hand? Our step-by-step guide on how to download a YouTube thumbnail covers iPhone, Android and the direct image URLs.
Which thumbnail sizes can you download?
YouTube stores several copies of every thumbnail. Which ones exist depends on the original video:
| Name | Size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| maxresdefault | 1280 × 720 (16:9) | Full HD reference, mood boards, blog headers |
| sddefault | 640 × 480 (4:3) | Fallback when HD is missing |
| hqdefault | 480 × 360 (4:3) | Always available; good for small previews |
| mqdefault | 320 × 180 (16:9) | Lists and widgets, no black bars |
| default | 120 × 90 (4:3) | Tiny icons |
The 4:3 sizes include black bars above and below a 16:9 image. If “Max resolution” shows Not available, the video was uploaded below 720p or is very old — use Standard or High quality instead.
Why creators download thumbnails
- Competitor research. Collect the top 10 thumbnails for your keyword and look for patterns in faces, colours and text length.
- Swipe files. Keep a folder of thumbnails that made you click, then test your own designs against them with the A/B compare tool.
- Recovering your own artwork. Lost the original file for a video you published? Download the HD version of your own thumbnail.
- Embedding and blogging. Use a video’s thumbnail as a preview image when you write about it, with a link to the video.
Respect creators. Thumbnails are copyrighted by the people who made them. Downloading for personal reference, research or commentary is common, but don’t re-upload someone else’s thumbnail as your own. See our terms.
Is this a video downloader?
No. GrokThumbnails only works with thumbnail images, which YouTube serves publicly for every video. We do not download, convert or store videos or audio.
Frequently asked questions
Is the YouTube thumbnail downloader free?
Yes. Every tool on GrokThumbnails is free, has no download limits, and doesn’t require an account.
Can I download YouTube Shorts thumbnails?
Yes. Paste a Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…) and you’ll get the same sizes as a normal video. Shorts thumbnails are stored at 16:9, so the vertical frame you see in the app is a crop.
Why is the HD (1280×720) thumbnail not available?
YouTube only creates the maxresdefault image when the video was uploaded at 720p or higher, or when the creator uploaded an HD custom thumbnail. Older and low-resolution videos only have the smaller sizes.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Copy the link from the YouTube app with Share → Copy link, paste it here in Safari or Chrome, and tap Download. On iPhone you can also long-press the image and choose “Save to Photos”.
Can I get a 4K thumbnail?
YouTube’s public thumbnail URLs top out at 1280×720 for most videos. If a creator uploaded a larger file, YouTube still serves the 1280×720 version through these links.
Do you store the links or images?
No. The downloader builds the image addresses in your browser. We don’t keep a log of the videos you look up.
