The right size for a YouTube thumbnail
YouTube recommends custom thumbnails at 1280 × 720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640 pixels. The standard upload limit is 2 MB, and JPG, PNG, GIF (not animated) and BMP files are accepted. YouTube has started allowing larger, higher-resolution thumbnails on some channels; if your upload screen offers a bigger limit you can raise the “Max file size” setting above, but 1280×720 under 2 MB works on every channel. Full details are in our YouTube thumbnail size guide.
Crop, Fit or Stretch — which should you pick?
- Crop to fill scales the image until it covers the whole 16:9 frame and trims the edges. Best for photos where the subject is near the centre.
- Fit keeps the entire image visible and fills the empty space with a blurred copy of the image or a solid colour. Best for screenshots, vertical photos and Shorts frames.
- Stretch forces the image to the exact size and distorts it. Only use it when your image is already very close to 16:9.
How the 2 MB compression works
When you choose JPG or WebP, the tool first saves at 95% quality. If that file is larger than your limit, it runs a quick binary search — trying quality levels between 30% and 95% — and keeps the highest one that fits. At 1280×720 most thumbnails land well under 2 MB at 85–95% quality, so the result is visually identical to the original.
PNG is lossless, so it can’t be compressed this way. If a PNG ends up over the limit you’ll see a warning — switch to JPG, which is what YouTube re-encodes thumbnails to anyway.
Fixing “Thumbnail file too large” and other upload errors
- File too large: keep 1280×720 and JPG; the tool will bring it under 2 MB.
- Black bars around the thumbnail: the image isn’t 16:9. Use Crop to fill or Fit.
- Blurry thumbnail on TV: your source was smaller than 1280 pixels wide. Start from a larger image rather than upscaling.
- Colours look different after upload: export from your editor in sRGB before resizing.
Private by design: resizing and compression happen with the HTML5 Canvas API on your device. Your image is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best YouTube thumbnail size?
1280 × 720 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio, under 2 MB. It has to be at least 640 pixels wide.
How do I make my thumbnail under 2 MB?
Upload it here, keep JPG selected and the limit at 2 MB. The tool automatically finds the highest quality that fits under the limit.
Will compressing reduce quality?
Only slightly, and usually not visibly. Thumbnails are shown far smaller than 1280×720, and YouTube recompresses uploads anyway.
Can I resize a vertical (9:16) image?
Yes. Choose Fit with a blurred background to keep the whole image, or Crop to fill to zoom into the centre.
Is WebP accepted by YouTube?
YouTube’s help pages list JPG, PNG, GIF and BMP. WebP is offered here for websites and blogs; use JPG for YouTube uploads to be safe.
Is my image uploaded to your server?
No. All processing happens in your browser.
