Why preview a thumbnail before uploading?
You design a thumbnail at 1280 pixels wide on a big monitor, but most people see it at a fraction of that size, surrounded by other thumbnails competing for the same click. Text that looks bold in your editor can turn into a smudge on a phone, and a colour scheme that pops on white can disappear in dark mode. A preview shows you the thumbnail in context, so you can fix problems while the video is still a draft.
How to use the thumbnail tester
- Add your image. Drag a JPG or PNG onto the box, click to browse, paste from your clipboard, or load an existing video’s thumbnail by URL.
- Type your real title. The title and thumbnail work as a pair. Check that they complement each other instead of repeating the same words.
- Switch layouts and themes. Look at Home, Search, Mobile and Sidebar in both light and dark mode.
- Squint test. Lean back from the screen. If you can’t tell what the video is about in one second, simplify.
What to look for in each layout
Home feed
This is where most browse traffic comes from. Your thumbnail sits in a grid with others, so contrast with its neighbours matters more than detail. A single strong subject and two to four words of text usually beat busy collages.
Search results
Search shows a larger thumbnail beside the title and description. Viewers are comparing several answers to the same question, so make the outcome or promise obvious at a glance.
Mobile feed
On phones the thumbnail spans the screen width but is still small in absolute terms. Faces, large shapes and high-contrast text survive; thin fonts and small logos don’t.
Up Next sidebar
At about 168 pixels wide this is the toughest test. If your thumbnail still reads here, it will read everywhere. Pair this check with our safe zone checker to make sure the timestamp isn’t covering anything important.
Privacy: your image is shown using a temporary browser URL and never uploaded to our server. Close the tab and it’s gone.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an official YouTube preview?
No. The layouts are generic mockups modelled on how video platforms typically display thumbnails. Spacing changes over time and between devices, so treat it as a close approximation rather than a pixel-perfect copy.
Does my thumbnail get uploaded anywhere?
No. The preview runs entirely in your browser using a temporary object URL. Nothing is sent to our server.
What image size should I upload?
Use a 16:9 image, ideally 1280×720 or larger. If yours is a different shape, the tool will warn you — use the Thumbnail Resizer to fix it.
Can I test dark mode?
Yes. Use the Light/Dark switch above the preview. Thumbnails with dark edges can blend into a dark background, so it’s worth checking both.
How long can my title be?
YouTube allows 100 characters, but feeds usually show around 60–70 before truncating. The preview clamps the title to two lines, so you can see where it gets cut.
