How to Download a YouTube Thumbnail (Desktop, Android & iPhone)

Updated October 18, 2026

You can save any YouTube video’s thumbnail in under ten seconds. Here are three methods — from one-click to fully manual — and how to get the HD version.

Method 1: Use a thumbnail downloader (fastest)

  1. Copy the video’s link. On a computer, copy it from the address bar. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Open the GrokThumbnails thumbnail downloader and paste the link.
  3. Press Get thumbnails, choose a size, and press Download.

This works for regular videos, Shorts, live streams and youtu.be short links, on any device.

Method 2: Build the image URL yourself

Every YouTube thumbnail lives at a predictable address. Find the 11-character video ID — it’s the part after v= in a watch link, after youtu.be/ in a short link, or after /shorts/ for Shorts. Then put it into one of these URLs:

SizeURL pattern
1280 × 720https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg
640 × 480https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/sddefault.jpg
480 × 360https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg
320 × 180https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/mqdefault.jpg
WebP versionhttps://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.webp

Open the URL in your browser, then right-click (or long-press on mobile) and choose Save image as.

Method 3: On iPhone and Android

iPhone (Safari)

  1. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Open Safari, go to grokthumbnails.com and paste the link.
  3. Tap Download, or long-press the image and choose Save to Photos.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Copy the link from the YouTube app.
  2. Paste it into the downloader in Chrome.
  3. Tap Download. The image goes to your Downloads folder and appears in your gallery.

Why is the HD thumbnail missing?

The maxresdefault image only exists when the video was uploaded in 720p or higher, or the creator uploaded an HD custom thumbnail. Older or low-resolution videos only have the smaller versions. In that case YouTube returns a small grey placeholder. Use sddefault or hqdefault instead — they are always available.

Can you use a downloaded thumbnail?

Thumbnails are the creator’s copyrighted work. Saving one for personal reference, research or to study design patterns is common. Reusing it in your own video, re-uploading it as your own, or using it commercially generally needs the creator’s permission. When in doubt, ask, and always credit and link to the original video.
