These numbers come from YouTube’s own help documentation and have been stable for years. YouTube has recently begun allowing larger, higher-resolution thumbnail uploads on some channels, aimed at big TV screens. If your upload screen accepts a larger file, you can use it — but a 1280 × 720 JPG under 2 MB works on every channel and looks sharp on every device.
Need to hit these numbers quickly? The thumbnail resizer converts any image to 1280 × 720 and compresses it under 2 MB in your browser.
Why 1280 × 720 is the sweet spot
Thumbnails are displayed at many sizes — from about 120 pixels wide in compact lists to full-width on a TV home screen. 1280 × 720 is large enough to look crisp on high-density phone screens and most TVs, but small enough to stay comfortably under the file size limit without heavy compression.
Uploading a smaller image (say 640 × 360) is allowed, but YouTube has to upscale it on larger displays, which makes it look soft. Going much larger rarely helps unless your channel has the higher limit, because the file may exceed 2 MB.
The 16:9 ratio matters as much as the pixel size. YouTube’s video player and feeds are 16:9, so a 4:3 or square image gets black bars or cropping.
JPG vs PNG for YouTube thumbnails
- JPG is the best default. It handles photos and gradients well and keeps files small. Export at 85–95% quality.
- PNG keeps hard edges perfectly sharp, which helps with flat graphics and text. The trade-off is file size — a detailed PNG can easily exceed 2 MB.
- GIF is accepted but only the first frame is used. Animation isn’t supported.
- BMP works but produces huge files. Avoid it.
Whatever you upload, YouTube re-encodes the thumbnail into its own formats for delivery. That’s why a high-quality JPG is usually indistinguishable from a PNG once it’s live.
YouTube Shorts thumbnail size
Shorts videos are vertical (9:16, usually 1080 × 1920), but their thumbnails are stored at 16:9 like regular videos. In the Shorts shelf, YouTube shows a vertical crop from the centre of the frame. Two things follow:
- Keep the subject and any text in the centre of the frame.
- You can pick a frame from your Short as its thumbnail in the YouTube app; check it looks good when cropped.

Fixing common thumbnail upload problems
“The file is too large”
Resize to 1280 × 720 and save as JPG. If it’s still too large, lower the quality slightly — or let our resizer find the best quality under 2 MB automatically.
The custom thumbnail button is missing
Custom thumbnails require a verified account. Verify your channel in YouTube’s settings using a phone number, then wait a short while for the feature to unlock.
Black bars around the thumbnail
The image isn’t 16:9. Crop it to 16:9 or use “Fit” with a blurred background.
The thumbnail looks blurry
Your source image was too small or saved at low quality. Recreate it at 1280 × 720 or larger and export at high quality.
“Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”
YouTube limits how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload per day. Wait 24 hours and try again.
